The Atlanta Science Festival is this month and will feature many remote and outdoor safe socially distanced events. The Atlanta Science Festival always goes out of it’s way to include events for everyone regardless of age or level of science knowledge. It has family friend events like this year’s free Discovery Walks event which will have four self guided walks throughout locations in Atlanta. If you’re like me and love science but not “great at” science you’ll love their “science lite” events like Science Improv or Spill the Tea: Kitchen Science in Action “the tastiest science demonstrations in Atlanta”. The Atlanta Science Festival runs from March 13-27th and you can find event info and tickets on their site.

Historic School Re-Opened Ready for More History

The new Howard Middle School in Atlanta’s Old 4th Ward has opened for students for the first time since 1976. Howard first opened as an elementary school in 1924 and many of Atlanta’s most iconic citizens were alumni including Martin Luther King and Maynard Jackson. The renovation for the nearly 100 year old building started in 2019. Urbanize Atlanta has put together a great before/after photo gallery where you can see how they modernized the building but kept intact the building's sense of history.

Bar Vegan Opens in Ponce City Market

Have you ever been drinking a gin and tonic and thought, “You know what would make this drink better? If it was vegan!” No? Well apparently someone has! Vegan Bar is opening this weekend in Ponce City Market. The restaurant and cocktail bar is from the owner and founder of Slu….oh, this is a family site…”Loose Morals” Vegan, famous for their delicious vegan hamburgers. Vegan Bar will have many of the foods made famous from its sister restaurant, as well it’s vegan takes on classic cocktails and “wildly over-the-top tableside drinks served in a fire extinguisher, Ferris wheel, or a gas can”. Wow. Okay. As long as vegan alcohol has alcohol in it we’re SOLD! 

The Sound of Annoyance

In the best news for anyone who lives in Atlanta and sleeps past 9am, the city is looking into how it can curb the use of leaf blowers. Leaf blowers aren’t just incredibly annoying they are incredibly bad for the environment. Operating a leaf blower for an hour releases the same amount of pollution as driving 1,100 miles! The Atlanta City Council has asked Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division to provide information on steps Atlanta could take to regulate leaf blower use. The Georgia EPD has a deadline of May 31 to provide guidance to the City Council. Animals like song birds, toads, fireflies, relay on fallen leaves to provide food and shelter. Which provides a GREAT excuse for people who hate raking leaves!
