New Home Construction Surges in Atlanta

If you’ve been looking for a home or know anyone who is, you’ve no doubt heard about the lack of supply of homes for sale. So, it may surprise you to learn that the metro Atlanta area ranked 4th in America in new home building permits issued last year. The metro Atlanta area had 28,632 new building permits last year, and as a point of reference metro, Los Angeles had 9,737, and metro Chicago had 8,122. With that many new building permits, you’d think this would be a much-needed relief to the home sales market. But, the increase in building permits in Atlanta was less than 10% from the previous year, which isn’t that much when you consider that metro Houston, the city with the most home building permits last year at 49,915, was a 26% increase over the previous year. If you’re worried about a housing “bubble” or “burst” in Atlanta, this should calm your nerves. No matter what metric you use, Atlanta is in the top 5 fastest-growing large cities in the US, and with the growth not expected to slow anytime soon, we’re going to need A LOT more homes. This means demand is there and prices will stay high or continue to grow if supply can never catch up to demand. On the other hand, if you’re waiting for the market to slow down to buy your next home, you might be waiting a while.

Atlanta Gets the Best Walk of Fame Ever

Atlanta, already known for its rich music history, will now be home to the Black Music and Entertainment Walk of Fame. Like other famous walks of fame, each person or group will be memorialized by having a permanent emblem on the sidewalk. The inaugural inductions will be open to the public and taking place June 17 at 11 am, where the walk of fame will be located, in front of Mercedez Benz Stadium near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Twelve artists and groups will be in the inaugural class. You can find the complete list here, but I’ll save you the trouble. Yes. Outkast is one. I will say, though, it’s kinda mind-blogging Prince wasn’t in the inaugural class. Maybe it was so obvious they forgot, like when you “can’t find” your phone when you’re talking on it. Every year new members will be inducted, so I’ll be taking over/under bets for artists Gucci Mane, Janelle Monáe, and Lil Wayne.

A Snooze of a Story

Atlanta Public Schools were planning to start high school classes at 7:45 next year. Which was obviously a bad idea to anyone that has met a 15-year-old, was a 15-year-old, and most apparently to parents who have to wake up 15-year-olds. To the shock of no one, they have reversed course and will now be starting high school at 8:45. Kinda a snooze fest right? HOW ABOUT THEM HAWKS?! Atlanta’s favorite team now and forever will be playing Game 2 against the 76ers on June 8th to hopefully taking a 2-0 led-in the series home. They will be playing Games 3 and 4 at State Farm Arena on Friday the 11th and Monday the 14th, to a nearly full occupancy stadium. Did you see this deeeep Trae three-pointer? Or this crazy John Collins alley-oop to seal the game? Or this Atlanta fan screaming at the sky after a dunk and making everyone Sixers fan hate him? Just love the Hawks already.

Summer is Here, Now Comes Beer

Atlanta Summer Beer Fest will be this Saturday, June 12th, in Historic Old Fourth Ward Park. Admission will grant you “free” sampling of over 150+ beers from Georgia brewers and around the country. There will also be over 25 wines, seltzer, and ciders. Attendance will be limited to those over 21 and the event won’t be open to pets. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 the day of, but you should probably purchase tickets ahead of time as the event will have reduced capacity and could sell out. If you don’t want to go, but you’d like to watch dozen and dozens of drunk people falling off Bird scooters on the Beltline, the event ends at 8 pm.
